Does All Comedy End in Hate

Two of my all time comedy heroes Eric Idle and John cleese are fighting, and using public forums to grouse at each other.
It's a goddamn shame. Speaking as someone who has been drawn into the same kind of silliness in the past, I just wish people would pick up a fucking phone and yell at each other instead of muddying the comedy gifts, and joy that they have shared with us all.
The battle of words over the fate of Ren & Stimpy so soured the memory of the show, that anytime some posts anything about the show, the stupid stupid battle starts all over again. It's sad that entertainment gets corrupted over money, and egos to the point that it robs the joy of the original project from it's fans.
It makes me want to do this.

A day at the Beach with Robert Blake.

A short Story by Katy Odell Radcliffe:

I never see celebrities when I’m out and about. I either don’t recognize them or I’m just oblivious to them, and if someone doesn’t tell me who just walked past, I’ll never know. I once had a conversation about the difference between g-strings and thongs with some woman in a valet parking queue and I didn’t know I’d been talking to Patricia Arquette until my friend told me, later.

Some years ago, I went on a first date with a man named Vincent. First, we walked along the Venice Beach boardwalk, where I found a hundred-dollar bill on the ground. That seemed a good omen for the day ahead. Then, we went to Malibu, and had lunch at a taco stand by the beach. I went up to get some condiments at the window and when I got back to our table, Vincent told me “That guy next to you in line, who was checking you out, was David Spade.” As you probably know, David Spade looks exactly like himself, so I don’t know why I didn’t notice him until he was pointed out to me. I thought this was terribly exciting, although Vincent probably made up the part about him checking me out. Vincent was a real gentleman in that respect.

We walked onto the sand, where we sat on a towel and drank mimosas Vincent had brought in a cooler. I’m afraid of water, so sitting and people-watching is about all I’ll do at the beach. I was feeling pretty flush with found money and flattery, and generally feeling like I was having the best day of my life.

Then, I noticed this older guy walking up and down the beach. He wasn’t a remarkable looking man in terms of physiognomy, but he caught my eye because there was just something odd about him. He was pacing up and down the beach in this very self-conscious way that simply seemed weird, and I marvelled at him. When he was passing by us for a third time, about thirty feet away from us, I remarked to Vincent, “Look at that man. He looks like he jacks off in the mirror!” I said this in a fairly subdued conversational tone, so I was surprised when Vincent murmered, “That’s Robert Blake, and he heard you.”

“How can he have heard me? We’re at a noisy beach and he’s not that close.”

“Because he’s insane, and crazy people hear everything. I saw him flinch.”

As we watched him walk away Vincent told me a bunch of stuff about the crazy things Robert Blake was known to have done. I think there was something about running down Hollywood Boulevard in a dress, or naked, or something, but I can’t remember now. At any rate, I wasn’t convinced that Vincent was right about Robert Blake having heard me, as it just didn’t seem possible.

A couple of minutes later, Robert Blake came back towards us, and this time he had this sort of tight smile on his face. I became very absorbed in brushing the sand off my feet.

When he got to us, he turned and walked around us, keeping a distance of about 20 feet. When I got the nerve to look over my shoulder, he was circling around behind us, looking straight at me, smiling or grimacing at me.

He circled us repeatedly, never taking his eyes off of me, still smiling that angry little smile. I didn’t exactly feel scared of him, but I was definitely creeped out and afraid that he was going to actually confront me on my comment about his masturbatory habits. I didn’t know what I would say if he did, because I was becoming more and more certain that he *did* jack off in the mirror.

He didn’t say anything, though. After about three laps, he seemed satisfied that he’d made his point, and walked off down the beach.

The rest of the date was fantastic and the Robert Blake incident later came to seem like just another fun part of a really romantic day. I eventually forgot all about it. But, several years later, when he was arrested for the murder of his wife, I didn’t have any doubts that he was guilty.

Vincent's PS:The story is true, but I feel I need to throw in that I have been a fan of Robert Blake and his work since I was a kid. The reason I knew his crazy back stories was that Robert Blake told me and the rest of America in multiple candid and honest interviews on Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show.

This is based on my favorite dad and son story as told by the son not too long after the event.The family had to move and the kid wasn't very happy about it. Then I saw him a week later for his art lesson, and he tells me about he and his dad finding a leprechaun village in the forest behind his new house. His face was lit with excitement. They even found a treasure map of the Leprechaun King.
I don't know if the dad went out and built this little village, or if he had it built. But wow, what a great idea, that was executed perfectly.

CYMAX Stores Should be Avoided Worst Customer Service I've Ever Experienced

Cymax is a furniture Seller/Shipper. run away from them.
Cymax left me hanging for a month. When I would check my order on line it would say"in progress" after a month I called and was informed that there was an "unspecified problem in communicating my order"But they could not tell what or why. (that is no way to run a business)
NO ONE had contacted me to tell me there was any sort of problem. They just left me flapping in the wind, thinking my TV stand was working its way to me.
I was told to wait yet another week to see if this could be sorted out. So I sit on my hands for a week, with my new TV sitting on the floor in harms way. At the end of the week Cymax STILL had NO answer as to why there was a problem, or when they might rectify it. Mind you they of course charged my card. I now have canceled my order and ordered from what I hope is a more reputable company, that has the ability to pick up a phone and sort out their internal problems, as well as keeping their customers informed.
I will NEVER EVER order anything else from CYMAX. Worst vague customer service I've ever received.
My Guess is they won't publish this But I will post it on all the social networks I have access to.

New Orleans

My Place in New Orleans. It was a 3 story apt. above Cigar’s pool Hall. Each floor was 1000sqft. I used to ride my bicycle around on the third floor. The only furnishing on that floor, were a winged club chair and an antique reading lamp that sat on a 10 by 20 oriental rug. All of which I had inherited from the previous tenants Jim and I think her name was Gwendolyn. Jim was a junkie, and Gwendolyn did paintings and sold them in Pirates Alley. What did this 3000sqft wonderful hovel set me back? Only three hundred smackers a month. In the attic were probably 40 to 60 ancient phone jacks in the wall. The old kind with the huge three or four pronged plugs. The 1940's idea of portable. Phones used to be so heavy and strong that you could literally beat someone to death wit the receiver. I’m guessing the place was a book joint at one time. Turns out Lee Harvey Oswald lived there with his mom 30 years before me. It’s odd to share a bathtub with an assassin. Even with thirty years between your immersions. Did he lay in this tub reading books for hours to escape like me, from the New Orleans heat? Or did he lay in the tub dreaming of time when everyone would know his name? It's a little extra odd that, he had a room in a boarding house in Oak Cliff, not far from my childhood home and indeed shot and killed Officer Tippett on my street, East 10th.

Oswald was caught and beaten in the Texas theater. The first Movie theater I ever attended. For years the theater kept the chair he was sitting in when apprehended upholstered in black felt. Always back there in the dark reminding you that this is the seat were one of the major hands of death had sat.

Above is Steve Valenti's Paddock Lounge. It was located at 309 Bouron Street, it was catty cornered from the famous Absinthe House. I did caricatures and during Mardi Gras, face painting on the sidewalk in front of the Paddock from my late teens and into my early twenties.
I was in one of the few god spots. Meaning it was not a permitted or licensed spot. I was protected from the N.O police dept. by the owner of the Paddock Lounge via the long term relationship that she and her husband had with the New Orleans chief of police. She had inherited the bar from her husband Steve Valenti, that rumor has it opened the place on a bet with his race track buddies that he wouldn't be able to make a go of it. So at 29 in 1925 he opened the Paddock Lounge, and it ran as one of the go to jazz haunts until the 80's. I meet a lot amazing talents standing in front of my easel under the club's flickering neon light. I talked with Phil Harris while he had a smoke between sets of James Davis' band. One night a guy came out of the paddock for some air, wearing a big fedora hat and long silk scarf. A little guy with curly hair. We talked about the the heat, and what a cool night it had become. Then I asked if he was often mistaken for Bob Dylan, he said yes and introduced himself. "Robert Zimmerman"' he said, "Pleased to meet you."
It was months later that I learned that was BD's real name. Still not sure if it was him. I also met famous Painter and Cartoonist Lynne Naylor standing in front of the paddock. It was years later, after working together for a while, we realized we had met way back when in New Orleans. Lynne may have been the first person to make me truly aware of animation as a possible career.Being the first person in the business I ever spoke with. She was pals with the wife of the Paddock band's sax player Charlie May.Who's wife was a colorist at Hanna Barbara Studios. File under small world.

Most of the artists on the streets of New Orleans are in what is known as permitted spots. There are A permits and B permits. You have to purchase a permit, and all the good A permit spots like the Jackson Square permits only become available if one of the artists passes on, or in drunken over sleeping stupor they let their permit lapse.
I was an extremely lucky boy to have inherited that spot from Bob Miller. He no doubt could have charged a huge fee for the spot. I was told that many an artist wondered what I had done to earn such a coveted location. The answer was three fold, one was that Bob Miller took petty on a young artist that he thought could use some grounding, and two, the fact that Bob Camp and I went out on several drinking binges with him. Three, that on one of those binges, while pushing two drunken Bobs that were sitting on top of Bob Miller's art cart. I managed to run over myself with said same cart. I remember a moment where I was laying there with the filth Bourbon Street soaking into the back of my white terry cloth polo shirt, looking up and seeing Bob Miller looking back down into the eyes of the guy that was supposed to driving this two hundred pound, (not counting the two men sitting on top of it) cart full of his art supplies, lights and easel, and I think it was at that moment that he decided, "This poor bastard needs some help." It was either that night or the next that he asked if I'd like to take his spot in front of Steve Valenti's. I had spent the last few weeks or months, it's kind of a blur, sitting with my B. permit, eking out a living in what is known as Pirates Alley. Or some nights setting up with Bob Camp across the street from Cafe Du Monde in the doorway of a closed chachka shop. We would catch a few people that in the cool of the evening, and after a few daiquiris would spring for a caricature of themselves doing whatever they loved to do or wished they loved to do. We'd work there til one or two in the morning. Then after some sleep we'd trudge back out to catch the day crowd in Pirates Alley.

Above judging by his attire this must have been in the dead of winter.

A thin strip of alley that ran from Jackson Square to Royal St. Other than the beautiful old cathedral than ran along one side of the alley, and the flagstone that gave it's old world charm, the most prominent feature of Pirates Alley in the morning, as you set up your easel, sign and chairs, was the overwhelming stench of piss from the previous nights revellers, who's bladders wouldn't carry them home or the next bar stool with out the sweet relief of pissing in public. As the sun beat down on the flagstone and humidity level rose so did the smell of urine, which had combined itself with not only last nights dose, but with all the urine that had been sprayed in the shadows all the years previous, making itself into a supper vapor. Guaranteed to make all but the most insensitive customer, decide that they should keep walking through to Jackson Square and pay a higher price caricature, but in much more pleasant surroundings. Standing in front of my easel, I'd silently pray for a morning rain to at least beat back the smell to a tolerable level.

So it was with great joy and anticipation that accepted Bob Miller's offer to take over his spot on Bourbon Street.
I might have still been working there today had there not been an incident, that made the police chief retire. With his retirement and placing of a new chief that had no relationship with Mrs. Valenti in charge of the goings on in the French Quarter. It wasn't long before the police that earlier had been dissuade from rousting me off my spot by Mrs.Valenti (all four foot eleven waddling inches of her) and her threats of them having to walk a beat in the projects, if she had to call Jimmy, now with jimmy safely out of the picture, the police started arresting me for plying my trade.

Collapsed in the infamous 126 Exchange Alley, after a long night of Caricaturing on Bourbon St.and probably a visit to Molly’s Irish pub on the way home. For awhile i had the only caricature stand on Bourbon Street. The light from the window was a reflection of the neon light of the Oyster House next door. It always looked like the light of dawn outside my window.
That’s a safe at the foot of my bed, it came with the place. It was good for keeping my wads of ones and fives.

After spending the summer in Provincetown doing caricatures. I was excited at the possibility of living in NYC and breaking into comic and or illustration business. After several months renting a small room in the back of Gary Hallgren's studio, one of my molars decided to implode. Now if haven't experienced this kind of pain, count yourself lucky. I needed a root canal, which is very expensive. At the time my budget was such that I had to decide each day whether I was going to have a sandwich, or a pint of hagen daz, because three dollars a day was what I had to deal with. This diet might also be the reason I needed a root canal.
A made a call back to Texas to see if I could get a small loan from my mom and step parent. All the while feeling like the side of my head was about to explode. They said they'd discuss and call me back. My step dad, not being the trusting sort didn't feel comfortable sending six hundred dollars off to NYC that "Who knows, maybe he has become a junkie, we don't know what he's up to in the wild and wooly city." So it was decided that they would send me just enough money for a bus ticket back to Texas.
I waited around for a day and a half for the money to clear through Western Union. All the while feeling like my head was being cleaved in two by gremlins sharing a dull axe.
I got my money, bought a bottle of whiskey for pain relief and climbed aboard a Trailways bus for the 96 hour trip back to Texas.

During a six hour lay over in Nashville, I was approached by a dirty haired girl with lithium starved eyes. She sat down next to me looked deep into my tortured soul, and asked "Can I sing to you?" She proceeded to sing me a song a cappella, to the quivering lump of pain that was me. Followed by another, and another, and another. I wish I could tell you that she had an angelic voice, that lifted me up and out of my misery. But alas, I cannot. Winos and Hobos were giving me sympathetic glances. Counting themselves lucky that she had found me rather than them. When the scratchy voice over the loud speakers called my bus to Dallas, no one was ever so happy as I to climb onto a stinking pissed stained bus.

36 more hours would find me in the sweet relief of a dentists chair.

Three months and three root canals later (I don't recommend going to dental schools for dental work. They are root canal happy) my step father who had told me I could stay at their place while I had my work done, came into my room and told me that I needed to take a job and start paying rent. That he felt I needed to learn responsibility. At this point I had been living on my own in New Orleans,taking care of myself since I was seventeen. I nodded and smiled as he left the room. I packed my back pack, and the next morning started hitchhiking toward the world of animation in the great state of California. I had three dollars cash, and a check for two hundred dollars that I'd earned for illustrating a book on Party Magic.

Howard Stern's Squeaky Clean

Those of you that are on facebook have seen this. So those that haven't, the back story is that Howard had his yearly doctor probing scheduled. A joy that all past the age of 50, should get done. He told the story of making himself crap before he left his house, because the previous year he thught he saw a little brown on the doctors retreating glove. Worried that his butt wouldn't be fresh as a rose for his doctors finger, he strips off his pants, and ties his shirt up in the daisy duke fashion, climbs in the shower and proceeded to soap his ass. All the while worried that his gal Beth would come up stairs and discover his shame. His telling made me laughing so hard that I had to draw it.
