You're being too hard on yourself (Heh heh, I wrote "hard on"). That hand has a lot of energy to it. Sketches are supposed to be messy. Preston Blair states in his book on animation, when searching for the right pose, "Don't draw, scribble!" (This is followed by an illustration of an aligator with many overlapping lines.)
