"Meal Penalty"... could be a cartoon show.

You'll be happy to know, Vince, that S. Clay Wilson is more or less fully recovered from a severe skull fracture he's been recuperating from for the last year or so.

I'm glad to hear Mr Wilson is doing better. I've couple of friends that have had serious head trauma and it is a very slow road back.

Abe if there smart they saving them I know I not the only one that draws on their timesheet so must have quite the collection.

What's your secret for drawing hands?

Kirk Nachman said...

It's funny to hear him referred to as "Mr. Wilson", like "Golly, Mister Wilson!" There was a bartender at one of Wilson's haunts who would condescendingly refer to him as "Steven" when he became unruly.

Thanks for your sentiments. I don't know if you like Wilson's work, but there is a sort of affinity between you,(particularly some of the nicer late 70's stuff, splash pages gone awry!) But you are a man, perhaps, of more restraint, (is that possible?) and your sleaze, well, it's damn near refined!

Yeah my first response to S Clay Wilson was to recoil.
It appeared all slap dash and meant to shock the viewer, with the chopping off and eating of penis heads and what not. I had leaned much more toward R Crumb,(Found a Butt Snoid Comic half in and half out of a mud puddle out in the woods.) Bill Stout, and Rick Griffin. But Wilson's work grew on me over time.

Trevor the only secret is draw a ton of them. But Studying people that draw great hands doesn't hurt.
John Buscema
Bob Camp
Michael Golden
Joe Kubert
There are a ton more.
There isn't a thing wrong with redrawing their hand drawings for hours until you get a grasp (oy)of what they are doing.

Crumb was once extremely funny, but totallly lackluster now, and overrated. Snoid Goes Bohemian. But yeah, Stout is a fine craftsman but kinda limited, methinks, Griffin is amazing, yaasss.

But then again, Bill Stout gave us Frankie Rat and Uncle Scam, remember? From Bicentennial Gross-outs and Slow Death!

yeesh, I guess my unsolicited spot critique of your men didn't sit well. My apologies, I often effect people this way.

Vincent Waller said...

K. No, I was just busy and forgot to approve your comments.
While I'm not in agreement on your feelings about Crumb, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Kirk Nachman said...

I know you're a busy man. To clarify, vintage Crumb is great. Whenever I find I'm not impressed with the drawing, that for whatever reason it looks shabby in the moment, Crumb's sense of humor and his stories, which resonate freely, easily, bring me back around. But the last 15 or so years haven't been very productive. I happily stumbled into his gallery here in NYC to find a charming little show of original Crumbs. He's taken to selling low energy place-mat sketches, and it's the pinnacle of cynicism. This shit drawing next to a great cover for HUP dated 1990! That seems to be the end. The Genesis thing just leads me to believe he believes the slop Robert Hughes has been writing about him. Like he's goddam Gustave Dore, if not Brueghal. There's more unsolicited opinion!
